Kam Dale, Contracts Manager at Fortel, observed that the larger group settings were somewhat disruptive. He remarked, “We quickly realised that smaller groups or individual meetings were more effective, and we adjusted our approach accordingly.”

Continuing Despite Challenges

Despite setbacks, such as the pause of major works last summer, the initiative pressed on. “Even when things got tough, like when major construction projects paused, we didn’t give up and continued our workshops. Towards the end, we discovered three ready-to-work individuals, but had limited positions available,” Kam explained.

Successful Collaborations for Job Placement

This challenge led to innovative solutions through industry collaboration. Kam reached out to other social value managers, helping to secure positions for two of the young people.

Over the past year, this initiative has not only helped young people secure jobs but has also demonstrated the potential of collaborative efforts to address workforce needs in construction. “Seeing our participants start successful careers is rewarding and motivates us to continue these efforts,” Kam noted.

This partnership exemplifies how targeted support and cross-industry cooperation can effectively assist homeless youth in starting new careers, ultimately benefiting the entire construction industry.

Maisy Knox, previously a part of the Fortel team, has returned to take on the pivotal and newly created role of Supply Chain and Marketing Assistant.

This strategic move reflects Fortel’s commitment to harnessing exceptional talent and driving forward its supply chain and marketing initiatives.

Maisy’s journey with Fortel began in its Willenhall office over three-and-a-half years ago, where she was a Sales Ledger Assistant. Her dedication and enthusiasm made a lasting impression during her time with the company, and now she returns to Fortel with a wealth of experience gained from various roles outside the company.

Maisy said: “Leaving Fortel was a tough decision, but I wanted to explore different opportunities and gain new experiences. I’ve worked in waste management and spent time working for HMP Oakwood, but Fortel always felt like home to me.” 

In her new role, Maisy plays an instrumental role in implementing new processes to streamline operations, enhance efficiency and deliver marketing and branding initiatives to elevate Fortel’s brand presence.

“At the moment, I’m fully office-based, but I’m excited about the prospect of eventually being out and about, meeting new people, and contributing to Fortel’s success in a meaningful way,” Maisy said.

Recently, we came together to celebrate Vaisakhi, a significant festival marking the birth of the Khalsa, a pivotal moment in Sikh history. At Fortel HQ, we celebrated with a variety of activities that brought our team closer together.

Celebrating Cultural Heritage

We organised an array of activities to honour this occasion, including delicious food, insightful presentations, and turban tying sessions. It was a wonderful opportunity for team members from various backgrounds to immerse themselves in the rich traditions of Vaisakhi and learn more about its profound meanings.

A highlight of the celebration was the presentation delivered by our colleagues, Jasdeep Singh and Balraj Singh. Their talk not only shed light on the historical and spiritual significance of Vaisakhi but also embodied the spirit of inclusivity and community that the festival promotes.

The Mission of the Khalsa

During the celebration, we reflected on the mission of the Khalsa, which is ‘Degh Tegh Fateh’ – meaning prosperity for all, justice for all, and victory. This philosophy emphasises fighting for food and freedom for everyone around the world, regardless of faith, caste, gender, colour, age, or other differences.

A Message of Unity and Peace
